Basic Course Description for Swim & Gym (also see syllabus):
Individual students are grouped with students of similar ability for both swimming and gymnastics.  American Red Cross certified swim instructors and experienced Andrews University Gymnics instructors work together to provide a 12-week session of quality programming.

Group Gymnastics classes will introduce basic tumbling and flexibility. Gymnastics teaches basic to advanced skills in tumbling, trampoline and acrobatics. Students are placed in groups of 4-6 students based on level and a coach teaches the next skill in a series of skills and disciplines.
Parents must sign a waiver form online prior to the start of class for both portions of the class. All participants must have personal insurance.

Because this course is on campus, the university requires a parking sticker on your vehicle. Stop by the Campus Safety office or register your vehicle online.

Students will bring appropriate gym clothes with socks and tennis shoes, a towel, and modest one-piece swimsuit for girls and trunks or knee length Jammers for boys.

Families must register with the partnership first. The YMCA Homeschool Coordinator will reach out to all registered participants to finalize YMCA program details. They will bill the partnership directly. Contact the YMCA for class dates, times and registration information.

Classes begin the week of Sept. 8th

**Days and times for classes may change, please contact the YMCA for days and times.**

Homeschool Swim and Fitness/Homeschool PE:

  • St. Joseph YMCA Tuesdays 1- 2:45 PM
    or
  • Niles YMCA Thursdays 1- 2:45 PM

Students ages 5-12 will engage in gym activities that will help build self-confidence, gain team building strategies, and socialization while having fun in a safe environment. Children will learn the fundamentals of fitness and swimming by participating in numerous activities that focus on physical fitness, team building, conditioning and learning to swim or working on stroke development and technique. We encourage each child to adopt a healthy lifestyle, which includes swimming and physical fitness.

****Parents cannot stay in class with the student, it is drop off only.  They are welcome to attend 'Watch Me Swim' days as offered, and they can stay in the lobby to observe the lessons, but they can't be in the gym or pool area.

*Please note: it is important to make as informed a decision as possible when choosing your student's Community Resource classes. Most locations will allow a student to drop a class after one meeting, at no charge if it wasn't a good fit for the student, but not all. Some classes plan ahead based on the number that have signed up and have purchased materials, hired teachers, etc. and there might be a fee for class time or materials given to the student if the student drops after one or two meetings. The school cannot pay for classes that students do not complete, so choose wisely; if you do not take the class off of your student's schedule by the deadline, you may be asked to pay for the class time incurred prior to dropping the class.
