For National School Board Recognition Month

Berrien Springs Public Schools is joining 537 local and 56 intermediate school districts across Michigan to celebrate January as School Board Recognition Month.

“This school year has been a year of change, and our school board members have taken part in courageous conversations while supporting effective programs and training;  their goal has been to continuously improve the educational experience for all students,” said Superintendent Dr. Thomas Bruce. “We celebrate our School Board this month to recognize their time and support.  Speaking on behalf of Berrien Springs Public Schools, we appreciate all they do.”

"As superintendent, I want to put a spotlight on our school board members who represent our community's values while keeping the education of our students as the top priority," said Dr. Bruce. "Their commitment underscores the significance of education both here in Berrien Springs, and our reach across the state. It is important to recognize that our board members practically volunteer their time, in addition to their families, businesses and careers,” Dr. Bruce said.

"One of the school board's main goals is to support student achievement," Dr. Bruce added. To achieve this goal, the board focuses on the following needs:

Supporting the district's vision of "Together, inspiring students to think, learn, achieve and care in a global community" and recognizing the integral role of student achievement in our district's vision.”
Setting board goals; and then passing policies and standards to support those goals. Finally, the board members review the overall progress and results.
They have oversight of our district's financial resources, towards district goals.
In order to have a rich learning environment, our board members support us in creating safe and orderly settings where staff and students can both excel.
Collaboration is essential. Our board members each have their own background and perspective.  Together, all seven members become the Board, contributing their insight and recommendations to the District.
Above all, our board members are focused on continuous improvement in student achievement for all students.

“Even though we are making a special effort during January to show appreciation for our school board members, we recognize their contributions reflect a year-round effort on their part,” Dr. Bruce said. “No matter what may lie ahead for our district in 2024, rest assured our school board members will continue to focus on enhancing student achievement and ensuring high quality educational opportunities for every student.”
